Essay on feminization of poverty in canada - ANADYS TROPHIES
oedipus fake essay by Ed Friedlander M.D. This website collects no information. Poverty? If you e-mail me, neither your e-mail address nor any other information will ever be passed on to any third party, unless required by paper law. In Canada? I have no sponsors and age essays, do not host paid advertisements. All external links are provided freely to sites that I believe my visitors will find helpful. This page was last modified December 3, 2010. If you are a student assigned to read or see King Lear , or an adult approaching it for the first time, your experience will be special. Poverty In Canada Essay? These notes will help you get started. Geoffrey of Monmouth (History of the English Kings, around 1140), who provides our oldest written reference to King Lear (spelled Leir), describes him as a pre-Christian warrior king in what is now southwest England. (Click here to read it yourself.) This area now includes Cornwall (origin of cornish game hens.) Saint Albans (Albany, for which the capital of New York State is named, is farther away. In the old story remembered by Geoffrey, Lear asked his three daughters whether they loved him. Essay On The Scarlet? Two claimed to poverty essay do so extravagantly, while the third said she loved him only as a daughter should.
Lear disinherited the introduction, honest daughter. The story appears elsewhere in world folklore; there is an Eastern European version in which the honest daughter says she loves her father as much as she loves salt. Lear went to live with his first daughter, bringing a hundred followers. She demanded that he reduce his followers to in canada essay fifty. Lear then went to live with the other daughter, who reduced the number to twenty-five.
Lear went back and forth between the daughters until he was alone. Abbreviations When Writing? Then the third daughter raised an army, defeated the other two, and poverty in canada, restored him to introduction research paper his kingdom. (The story appears in Holinshed, who adds that Cordelia succeeded her father as monarch and was deposed by in canada the sons of introduction career research paper her sisters.) This tale about how actions speak louder than words had recently been played on the London stage in The True Chronicle of King Leir. We have seen the essential story once again in the Japanese Ran , and poverty in canada, more recently in for a paper A Thousand Acres , an poverty intelligent feminist tale, with the abbreviations to use when writing paper, two older daughters as incest survivors who have spent their lives cajoling a crazy, abusive father and protecting their youngest sister. A different family problem from the Lear's -- the Fool says the king made his daughters his mothers (disciplinarians) rather than his wives, the rod refers to poverty a stick for spanking (spare the rod and spoil the introduction, child), and in III ii, King Lear calls on the storm to punish the crimes of poverty in canada others that usually go unpunished -- close pent-up guilts -- including incest and perjury but also planning murders and performing elder abuse.) Grigori Kozintsev's 1969 Russian version is called Korol Lir, translated into Russian by Boris Pasternak, (a few copies are usually available at amazon.com, and it is now re-released by the BBC). A bit of the fourth act made it into the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour for some reason. Shakespeare has retold the old story as a vehicle for a strikingly modern message.
Many people consider King Lear to be his finest work. Whether or not you agree with his vision of a godless universe in drinking which our only hope is to be kind to one another, you will recognize the in canada, real beliefs of many (if not most) of your neighbors. To find Shakespeare's intent, look first for: changes in the plot sources made by the author; passages that do not advance the plot or have obvious appeal to the intended audience. Shakespeare took a story that had a happy ending, and gave it a sad ending. He transformed a fairy-tale about virtuous and wicked people into something morally ambiguous. He took a story of essay and paper wrongs being righted, and turned it into in canada, the story of painful discovery.
He included passages that deal with ideas instead of advancing the plot. Lear is career research paper king of Britain. He is an old, highly successful warrior king. In Canada? (War is an institution that we despise, just as Shakespeare clearly despised it. But before birth control or real personal security, population pressures made war and even genocidal conflict a fact of life.) Like Hamlet and Othello, we are impressed with him because of on the scarlet what others say about poverty in canada his background. (You can find examples. At the end of the play, we will learn that despite his advanced age, he can still kill a young, armed man with his bare hands.) King Lear has decided to abbreviations to use retire and to divide his kingdom among his three daughters and in canada essay, their husbands. His stated intention is to prevent future conflict. This is really not very smart, since it actually invites war between the heirs. Shakespeare's audience (having just been spared a civil war following the abbreviations to use when writing, death of Elizabeth) would have realized this.
King Lear has staged a ceremony in which each daughter will affirm her love for him. Whether this has been rehearsed, or the daughters forewarned, we can only in canada, guess. Goneril and Regan may have been embarrassed. Goneril says she loves her father more than she can say. King Lear thanks her and gives her Third Prize. Regan says that she loves her father so much that she doesn't like anything else. King Lear thanks her and gives her Second Prize.
Cordelia says that she loves her father exactly as a daughter should. King Lear goes ballistic and disinherits her, and banishes the drinking age essays, Earl of Kent for speaking in poverty in canada essay her defense. First Prize is divided between the other two daughters. You can decide whether King Lear is showing early signs of mental illness (as his other daughters think), or whether he just wanted an to use when writing a research excuse to give Cordelia the poverty, best share of the kingdom and she just spoiled it. Cordelia has been courted by the Duke of Burgundy and abbreviations when writing a research paper, the King of poverty in canada essay France. Essays On The Influence? Burgundy says he will not marry a woman with no property. France is poverty in canada essay more clever. He swears that he loves Cordelia, and marries her.
This is an influence obvious plan to poverty make a claim on the British throne, and Shakespeare's audience would have realized this. We'll see the proof later. France may or may not be sincere in loving Cordelia. We won't know. As the basis of his retirement agreement, King Lear has stipulated that he will live alternately with his daughters, who will support him and for a career, 100 followers. When he leaves, Goneril and Regan express their understandable concern about poverty hosting a mentally-imbalanced father and his personal army. King Lear goes to live with Goneril.
The first daughter's steward Oswald yells at Lear's jester, and Lear punches the steward. Goneril decides to assert control. When the essays on the media influence, play is staged, a good director might have Lear's retinue disrespecting Goneril -- whistles, catcalls, lewd remarks, or whatever. Kent returns in disguise to serve Lear, and poverty essay, we meet the jester (Fool). For some reason, just like Kent, the jester is drinking age essays loyal to the king. A court jester might be a comedian-entertainer, or simply a retarded person kept as an object of amusement. Lear's jester is specially privileged to speak the truth, which he does ironically. Both the king and the jester make reference to the jester being whipped at poverty in canada, times -- Ian McKellen makes it clear that this is to use paper a joke, with the king tapping the face on poverty the jester's mock scepter (bauble / marotte). You'll need to drinking decide whether the king has always been kind to the jester, or whether the essay, jester (like Kent) for on the media influence some reason remains loyal despite past mistreatment. Oswald is rude to Lear, and one of Lear's knights makes an poverty in canada indignant speech about the king not being cared for properly. (This knight, and all the others, will soon abandon their king.) Lear yells at Oswald, Kent trips Oswald, and a scene ensues in which Goneril demands that Lear reduce the english introduction, number of his followers -- evidently to 50. Poverty In Canada Essay? Goneril (rightly) points out that her own people can care for him just as well. (There's a subtlety here.
In the original story, the daughters send the knights away, i.e., refuse to to use writing a research paper pay to support them. Essay? However, if you read closely, the knights are already leaving King Lear, because they can tell what is going to happen. The king is showing lapses in judgement, and has no way of forcing his daughters to honor their promise to support him. In a time of warlords, soldiers will desert when the introduction for a paper, leader shows signs of being unable to lead and/or guarantee their salaries.) Lear curses Goneril and departs for Regan's. Essay? He sends Kent before him, and Goneril sends Oswald. Regan and her husband have gone to drinking visit the Earl of Gloucester, and when Kent and Oswald meet at the Earl's castle, Kent picks a fight and Regan's husband puts him in the stocks. This is a serious breach of protocol, and when Lear arrives, he is furious. (Kent's difficult phrase Nothing almost sees miracles but misery, by poverty in canada its context, seems to to use when writing paper mean that when things seem to be going really badly, it's common to receive unexpected, seemingly-miraculous help.) Goneril arrives and essay, Lear curses her again. Regan says she will allow him only 25 followers. Since Lear no longer has a source of income, his followers are leaving en masse anyway, but Lear evidently does not realize this.
Lear says he will return to Goneril, but now she will not even allow 25, and introduction research, the daughters re-enact the fairy-tale plot by alternately reducing the numbers, and asking Why do you need even one follower, when we can care for in canada you ourselves? Of course, they are right, but Lear says that he measures his personal worth in terms of abbreviations to use writing paper his possessions. In Canada Essay? Reason not the abbreviations when a research, need! Our basest beggars are in the poorest things superfluous. Allow not nature more than nature needs, Man's life is in canada essay cheap as beast's. Vanities give meaning to life and this is what raises us above the level of animals. King Lear, now alone except for Kent and the jester, starts to cry and runs off as a storm brews.
The daughters lock him out of the castle to teach him a lesson. Lecturers who enjoy talking about The Elizabethan World Picture, in drinking age essays which orders of poverty nature reflect human law and its breakdown, will tell you that the introduction, ensuing storm mirrors the chaos in Britain. The Elizabethans paid lip-service to the idea that kings were magic, and actually knew that a stable monarchy was better for everybody than civil war. (Lawful democracy would be devised later.) King Lear yells back at in canada, what proves to be a preternaturally severe storm. His whole retinue have abandoned him except the jester, who begs Lear to go apologize to his daughters and abbreviations when writing a research paper, seek shelter, and Kent, who sends to poverty essay Dover, where the French army has landed in expectation of a British civil war. Even though the jester pretends to be foolish, he always knows exactly what is going on, and introduction career, what's more, he is loyal to the old king. You'll need to decide for yourself whether this is foolishness or profound wisdom.
In the first storm scene, which is difficult, Lear is going crazy. He: first calls on the power of the storm to poverty sterilize the to use writing paper, human race; then accuses the storm of poverty in canada essay taking sides with his daughters against his dignity and being their degraded slave; then, realizing that people have deceived him, says the english introduction, storm must be the in canada essay, gods's way of finding and punishing secret evildoers, and english a2 coursework, that he is a man more sinned against than sinning; then comments, my wit begins to turn, i.e., he realizes he is going crazy -- in literature, becoming insane is often a metaphor for changing the way you look at poverty in canada, yourself and the world; notices the jester is cold, and comments that he is a research also cold; this is the first time Lear has been responsive to the needs and essay, concerns of someone else; accepts Kent's suggestion to take shelter in a hut. Already inside the hut is one of the homeless mentally-ill. The play is probably better if, as it is sometimes staged, there are several lunatics all ranting together. (This one lunatic is actually a sane man in disguise, seeking refuge from private injustice. Essay And Paper? The extras who served as knights in the first and second act and who will be in the battle scenes at the end can be the extra lunatics.) When he sees the hut, and before seeing the poverty in canada, lunatic(s), King Lear realizes that what is happening to him now is media what he has allowed to happen to the poor throughout his reign. Oh, I have taken too little care of this. He suddenly realizes that his luxuries have been maintained at the expense of his poorest subjects, and that justice is only now being served on essay him. When he sees the lunatic(s), Lear cracks, and says he/they must have given everything to abbreviations writing paper their daughters and been turned out also. But the onset of madness confers a deeper insight. Lear sees in the naked lunatic someone who has taken nothing wrongfully from anyone, and is the in canada, essential human being. Saying that unaccommodated man is essay and paper no more but such a poor, bare, forked animal as thou art, the essay, king rips off his clothes.
In the third storm scene, King Lear holds a trial of analysis on the scarlet his two daughters, evidently mistaking a stool for Goneril, something else (I've seen a chicken used) for in canada essay Regan, and so forth. In one Royal Shakespeare Company production, the essay on the letter, king mistook a pillow that the jester was holding for Regan, and stabbed the jester to death through the pillow. The good Earl of Gloucester comes and urges Kent to take the king (who has passed out) to Dover, since his daughters' people are planning to kill him. Poverty In Canada? At the end, Kent tells the jester to follow Lear. As often played, Kent discovers the jester to be dead. The jester has no more entrances or lines, and perhaps the same boy-actor played Cordelia and the jester in the original production. Drinking? You can read more about Robert Armin, the beloved comedian who played Shakespeare's jesters at the time, elsewhere online. Kent and Lear reach Dover and Cordelia, who loves him.
Cordelia accompanies an invading French army. Essay? She may not realize this, but sending her is probably a cynical, no-lose move by the King of France. If his forces win and kill the english a2 coursework, other heirs, he is poverty in canada now also King of abbreviations to use when a research paper Britain. If his forces lose, the heirs will kill Cordelia and he will be rid of a wife who is no longer of in canada essay any political value. It seems to me that this is why the King of France suddenly had to return to his own country because of some sudden business that was more important than conquering England. Uh huh. He has left his wife either to do it for him, or be killed. (Shakespeare's English audience mostly did not like the French. Obviously Shakespeare couldn't show a conquering French king on influence his stage. But having the king land and then leave suddenly lets Shakespeare make the foreign king look machiavellian. You'll have to decide about this for yourself.)
Kent tells a friend that King Lear, in his more lucid moments, is too ashamed to see Cordelia. The king reappears in a field where the Earl of Gloucester lies, his eyes having been gouged out by Regan and in canada, her husband. King Lear is now crowned and decorated with weeds and wild flowers. He wavers between hallucinations and accurate perception. At the same time, he talks about his world, focusing on how fake ordinary human society is. When he coins money, only his royal title makes him other than a counterfeiter. People pretend to when be modest and poverty in canada, virtuous, but in private are as amoral and dirty-living as animals. The law is concerned with protecting the rich and concealing their misbehavior, not with promoting justice and fairness. English A2 Coursework? Regan and poverty, Goneril have played and essay and paper, humored him.
He learned the truth only in the storm. He says that when we are born, we cry that we are come to this great stage of poverty in canada essay fools. Cordelia's people come to bring him back to career their camp, and in canada, they chase him down. We next see King Lear asleep under the writing, care of Cordelia. He awakes, and thinks -- correctly -- that he recognizes her. But he thinks that they are both dead. Thou art a soul in bliss, but I am bound upon the wheel of fire, that mine own tears do scald like molten lead. Cordelia kneels, Lear tries to do the same (as in poverty in canada essay the older play), but Cordelia prevents him. Lear says he knows he is not in his perfect mind, and that he is bewildered, and that if Cordelia wants him dead he will drink her poison. When Cordelia says she has no cause to be angry, but merely wants to help him, Lear says Pray now, forget and forgive.
I am old and foolish. King Lear is a research paper not about wrongs being righted. If Shakespeare were a Hollywood writer, his king might have returned to poverty essay rulership and (having learned to be sensitive, and that it is all right to cry) become a champion for the poor in his own country and set up a social agency to deal effectively with other dysfunctional families. In contrast to the happy ending in abbreviations the source, Shakespeare has the French army defeated by the British, and Lear and Cordelia are captured. In Canada Essay? King Lear looks forward to happy time with his daughter in prison, merely laughing at the rest of the world. As the subplot concludes, all the villains are dead, but Cordelia has been hanged in prison. King Lear kills the hangman with his bare hands.
He comes onstage, carrying Cordelia's body and howling. King Lear's surviving heir, Goneril's good husband who is now sole head of the victorious army, returns Lear's royal power, but Lear does not notice. Suddenly uncertain whether she is alive or dead, King Lear bends to examine Cordelia, believes she is alive, and abbreviations to use writing a research, falls dead himself. The good survivors see the passing of a man who was larger than life. The secondary plot. King Lear's story is paralleled by the story of the Earl of in canada Gloucester. We meet him at the beginning, introducing his illegitimate son Edmund with some smutty jokes. We do not need to see Edmund's face to imagine how often this must have happened, and how Edmund's feelings must have been hurt by it. Perhaps this is part of how he got his attitude toward the world. Alone, Edmund soliloquizes that he is for a career research as talented and as loved as his legitimate brother Edgar, and that the accident of his birth is unjust.
He professes allegiance to nature rather than law or love, and decides that he will try to gain control of the earldom by removing his father and brother. Edmund takes a minute to ridicule astrology. We can ask ourselves whether Edmund is simply making fun of superstition, whether he is talking about self-empowerment like a 1990's person, whether he is disavowing a role for heaven (God, the supernatural, transcendent values, the ideals of religion, whatever) in poverty in canada his life, or whether he is denying their reality altogether. Later, the good Kent will look to introduction research the same stars to explain the differences in attitude among King Lear's daughters. Edmund forges a letter, deceives his father into believing Edgar has first asked him to help murder Gloucester, then pretends to have been injured by the fleeing Edgar. Poverty In Canada Essay? Gloucester declares Edgar an outlaw and abbreviations writing a research paper, Edmund his heir. Edgar finds refuge among the homeless mentally ill and later meets King Lear there. When France invades, Gloucester talks to Edmund about taking King Lear's side, and Edmund betrays him to Goneril and Regan.
Edmund shows Cornwall an incriminating letter to Regan's husband and pretends to be uncertain about whether his father is a traitor. True or not, is Cornwall's cynical reply, it hath made thee Earl of Gloucester. Pretending both moral outrage and the desire to follow proper legal procedure (the form of justice), Regan's husband carves out Gloucester's eyes. He stomps one eyeball flat on the ground for fun, but is stabbed to death by one of his own horrified servants, who is killed in poverty turn by Regan's backstab. Drinking Age Essays? The dying husband calls on Regan for help, but Regan likes Edmund instead. As the scene is often staged, she merely walks off and lets him die.
The director may even have her stab Cornwall again herself. Gloucester's servants tend his wounds and Edgar leads him, without revealing who he is, to Dover, where he meets Lear and laments his own foolishness. Poverty Essay? Then Oswald finds Gloucester and attacks him, but is killed by Edgar, who finds a letter incriminating Goneril for her adultery with Edmund. Age Essays? During the battle, Edgar finally reveals the truth to Gloucester and the old man dies happy. After the battle, Edgar defeats Edmund in a duel (Albany makes Edmund fight), jealous Goneril poisons Regan and then suicides, the brothers forgive each other, and poverty in canada, Edmund's last act is an attempt to career do good despite his own [evil] nature. He calls -- too late -- for Lear's and Cordelia's lives to be spared.
The subplot seems to have been inspired by an episode in Sidney's Arcadia about the King of Paphlagonia. Many details match, including the good son persuading the blinded father not to essay jump to essay letter his death off a cliff. Some commentators, including Edgar, have seen Gloucester's physical torture as punishment for his sexual sin. Poverty Essay? Be this as it may, King Lear contains the oldest torture scene that you'll see on the stage. Sensitive Victorians cut it from production. Media? Even by today's movie standards, it is a shocker. Since setting up this page, I've heard from a few students that their instructors said Today we consider Edmund admirable but in in canada essay Shakespeare's time his actions might have made the drinking age essays, audience angry.
I am not making this up. Evidently Edmund is in canada admirable because he has a grievance and talks about illegitimate sons being discriminated against, and is some kind of nature-worshipper. Abbreviations When Paper? This overshadows the way he treats everybody around him. An authentic liberal would wish that Edmund had shown a little real kindness to the genuinely needy people on his father's estate -- as King Lear ultimately wishes he had done. Admiring someone primarily for his grievances is the politics of extremism. Feel free to speak up in class. In Canada Essay? Your decent-minded classmates will appreciate it.
Themes and Image Patterns. Who is it that can tell me who I am? -- King Lear. The Elizabethans believed, or pretended to believe, that the introduction research, natural world reflected a hierarchy that mirrored good government and stable monarchy. This is a common enough idea in old books from various cultures. In Canada? Even our scientific age talks both about to use when paper laws of nature and good government through good laws, although of course we know the essential difference. Shakespeare's era contrasted nature and art (i.e., human-made decorations, human-made luxuries and technologies, human-made artistic productions), just as we talk about essential human nature contrasted to in canada culture.
Shakespeare's era also contrasted natural and unnatural behaviors; the latter would include mistreating family members, opposing the government, and various sexual activities not intended for procreation. King Lear deals with how children and parents treat each other, whether human society is the product of essay and paper nature or something we create so as to live better than animals do, and poverty, whether human nature is fundamentally selfish or generous. Not surprisingly, you can find various ideas about the drinking age essays, relationship between human beings and poverty in canada, the natural world. You already know that 57 different animals are mentioned in essays on the media the play. Lear tells Cordelia that neither human nature nor royal dignity can tolerate the way she has insulted him. Lear tells the King of France that nature is ashamed to poverty in canada have produced a child like Cordelia, whose lack of on the media love is so contrary to nature.
King Lear expects people to be naturally virtuous, in other words, to essay tell him the lies he wants to hear. The King of abbreviations to use when a research France suggests that Cordelia has a tardiness in nature, i.e., that sometime's it's natural to poverty be inarticulate. France sees nature as the abbreviations a research, source of human frailties, rather than vice. Edmund begins, Thou, Nature, art my goddess. Human law and custom have treated Edmund unfairly because his parents were not married. Edmund intends to look out for himself, like an animal. Edmund sees nature as the opposite of human virtue. Stupid Gloucester, deceived by Edmund, considers Edgar's supposed plot to murder him to be contrary to nature (unnatural, brutish). Gloucester believes in poverty essay astrology.
Gloucester thinks that the analysis essay scarlet, eclipses, which result from essay, natural causes, still have unnatural effects, causing the for a career paper, breakdown of human society. Edmund doesn't believe in astrology. Poverty Essay? He says he was born rough and self-centered, and that the stars had nothing to do with it. Later, Kent believes the stars must account for the inexplicable differences in essay and paper people's attitudes. Some Elizabethans believed that the stars affected nature as supernatural agents. Others believed that they were powerful natural forces.
Edmund remarks that Edgar's nature is gentle and naive, and (at the end) that he will do one last good deed in spite of mine own nature. (Do you think that Edmund realized -- for the first time, after the deaths of his two girlfriends -- that he COULD be loved, and this made him do something good? Edmund's remark about acting against his nature reminds us of the poverty essay, ongoing scientific and political controversies over how much of an individual's behavior is genetically programmed, how much is learned and conditioned, and how much one is responsible. (Nature vs. nurture; innate vs. cultural, and so forth.) King Lear, thinking of Cordelia's most small fault, laments the way it scrambled his mind (wrenched my frame of nature from its fixed place). King Lear also calls on nature as a goddess, to punish Goneril with infertility, or else give her a baby that grows up to hate her (a thwart disnatured torment). Lear says as he leaves Goneril's home, I will forget my nature, perhaps meaning he will begin crying again. Gloucester jokes that Edmund is loyal and abbreviations when, natural. The latter means both illegitimate, and that he cares for his own flesh-and-blood as a son should. Regan's husband speaks of Edmund's nature of such deep trust, i.e., his trustworthy character is in canada inborn. Kent tells the steward that nature disclaims thee; a tailor made thee, ridiculing his unmanliness and his obsequiousness. When Regan pretends to be sick, King Lear remarks that you're not yourself when natural sickness affects you.
We are not ourselves when nature, being oppressed, commands the mind to suffer with the body. There's a foreshadowing here. Regan tells King Lear that nature in you stands on the very verge of her confine. Age Essays? In other words, you're getting too old to make your own decisions, and Regan's behavior is only that of a good, natural daughter. We've already seen (allow not nature more than nature needs. Poverty In Canada Essay? ) King Lear says that it is superfluous luxuries that raise us above the natural level of animals. Analysis Scarlet? He will soon change his mind. Kent and the other basically good characters see the treatment of Lear and in canada, Gloucester as unnatural. Albany says to Goneril, That nature which condemns itself in research paper origin cannot bordered certain in essay itself -- i.e., if you mistreat your own parent, what kind of person must you be? Writers who talk about the Elizabethans believing in cosmic hierarchy and so forth will see a moral warning against deviating from nature: If you have violated nature by being less than generous to your parent, your self-centeredness will grow and you will become morally worse than an animal.
King Lear calls on essays the storm to crack nature's moulds and essay, end the human race. Kent urges King Lear to seek shelter, since man's nature cannot carry the affliction nor the force and drinking, the tyranny of the open night's too rough for nature to endure. King Lear, crazy, asks whether Regan's hard-heartedness is the poverty in canada, result of natural disease or chemistry or something perhaps cultural or perhaps supernatural. Is there any cause in nature that makes this hardness? When Lear falls asleep in the last storm scene, Kent sees his madness as oppressed nature sleeping.
Cordelia is analysis essay on the scarlet letter said to redeem nature from the poverty in canada, general curse brought by the other two daughters. With people like Cordelia in the world, one could not say the human race is generally bad by nature. The physician calls sleep our foster-nurse of nature. Readers may remember Macbeth, who after committing the unnatural crime of killing a king, becomes an insomniac. King Lear, with the insight of madness, decorates himself with wild flowers. You can use these various ideas about what's natural and what's not to develop a good paper. Thomas Hobbes observed that the on the influence, lives of wild animals and primitive people are mostly nasty, brutish, and short.
Despite romantic depictions, it would be hard nowadays to find anyone who would disagree. Nowadays, most people believe that culture is something that we invent so that we can fall in love, create works of art and essay, music, remember the past, and to use when paper, enjoy a reasonable prospect of good health, personal security, and poverty in canada essay, choosing our own paths through life. If most of us no longer believe that a king's sovereignty mirrors the harmony of a well-run natural world, we can still find fundamental human issues treated in King Lear . King Lear tells Regan that you're not human unless you have more than you need. (Allow not nature more than nature needs. ) Then in the storm, King Lear cries out introduction for a career research paper that only the poorest person, who owes nothing to in canada essay anyone (not even the animals), is truly human (. the thing itself.) Which do you think is right? In I.iv., King Lear himself introduces the question, Who am I? in the passage that begins Doth any here know me. Essay And Paper? and ends with Who is essay it that can tell me who I am? And if you want to keep it very simple, just notice this. King Lear and the mostly-good characters talk about nature as making us care about one another, especially our own families. Edmund talks about nature as making us care only about ourselves. Who is right? I can't tell you. You have a lifetime to decide for yourself. Many people approaching King Lear decided Edmund is abbreviations to use when a research paper their favorite character.
Shakespeare presents characters rather than caricatures, and our sympathies are always divided. Edmund is charming, clever, clear-headed (when others are not). And we see at poverty in canada essay, the very beginning how hurtfully and thoughtlessly his father has treated him. In keeping with the theme of the play, Edmund decides at on the, the beginning that human nature is fundamentally selfish. Poverty? And Edmund decides to act accordingly. English Introduction? In our world, such people always present themselves as having style, and in fact those who pray certain liturgies specifically renounce the glamour of evil. Edmund treats others horribly. Yet at the end, Edmund finds the decency he thought he didn't have, and tries to do good in in canada essay spite of [his] own nature.
I've seen this sort of thing in real life, and drinking, perhaps you have too. Poverty Essay? There's a good paper right here. Other image clusters in essays King Lear include clothing / nakedness (are you more yourself with your culture's clothes and the dignity they confer, or naked, owing nothing to in canada essay anyone?), fortune (is what happens to us dumb luck, predestined, or whatever?), justice (many different ideas), and eyeslght / blindness / hallucination (a blinded character and a hallucinating character both perceive things more clearly; the play asks Does human nature make us care only for ourselves, or for others?, our natural eyes may not give us the best answer.) And there's the recurrent theme of nothing . Age Essays? Cordelia can add nothing to her sisters' speeches. Lear says that nothing is the reward to Cordelia and poverty essay, Burgundy after Cordelia says nothing. Edmund was reading nothing, so Gloucester says the quality of nothing has no need to hide itself, and if it's nothing, he won't need his reading glasses. Lear says the jester's jingle is nothing, and the jester adds that Lear paid nothing for it. Asked if he can make use of nothing, Lear says again, nothing can come from nothing. The jester calls Lear a zero without a preceding figure, or nothing. Deprived of his identity, Edgard is nothing.
The storm makes nothing (should this be knotting?) of Lear's hair. But in the storm, Lear first decides to english say nothing, then admires the poor man who owes nothing to any other creature as the true human being. You can find several other examples, including insults of the form You're nothing but. . But King Lear's speech on owing nothing ends the image cluster. Perhaps Shakespeare is telling us that there is much of which we need to essay divest ourselves before we can find our real selves. What Shakespeare Could Not Say Openly?
Meantime, we shall express our darker purposes. -- Lear. You'll need to decide for yourself about what follows. The last lines of the play are puzzling, especially Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say. In Shakespeare's era, custom required that the first and essays on the, last lines of poverty in canada essay a scene be given to when writing a research the highest-ranking character on stage. The Quarto gives these to poverty in canada Albany (who is a duke, outranking an earl). This looks like an editor's attempt to correct what he thought was an error. The Folio gives them to Edgar, who has just been asked to assume the kingship by Albany. Giving Edgar a final word along with Kent and Albany seems right. Thanks to my correspondent Menay D'Ann Wilde of Mrs. Dodson's class at Hirshi High for drinking age essays asking the poverty essay, perfect question: Since Edgar is not coronated, did Shakespeare make a mistake? What do YOU think?
Was Shakespeare ignoring a hidebound, classist custom for the ending of his great tragedy? Albany's a duke and Edgar is essay and paper king-designate, so who outranks who? Was giving the good king-to-be, Edgar, the poverty essay, last word the best way to end a sad play on an upbeat note? Anyway. I think I understand what Edgar is saying. At the essays on the, time of someone's death, Shakespeare's contemporaries (and most of ours) will tell you that the survivors ought to say some conventional piety. Edgar says, Let's just tell the truth. This happened. Essay? This is sad. Shakespeare's England did not afford its citizens the same freedom of, or from, religion that we possess.
A few years before King Lear , the playwright Thomas Kyd had literally been tortured for expressing skepticism about for a research paper orthodox Christianity. Poverty In Canada? Christopher Marlowe, who Kyd implicated as a fellow-freethinker, escaped a similar fate only by getting murdered in a tavern brawl. Characters in King Lear often talk about the gods (the setting is pagan Britain); God is english a2 coursework mentioned only once by King Lear, who fantasizes (unrealistically) that he and Cordelia will be allowed to live and look at poverty, ordinary people without being involved as if we were God's spies. Hypocritical Edmund pretends that he's warned Edgar of the gods' wrath, King Lear swears by Apollo and Jupiter (and Kent, as a bitter joke, swears by Jupiter's wife Juno), and of course Gloucester says that the gods play with us as boys play with flies, killing us for fun. Edgar says (to Edmund, but for the benefit of the simple, good Albany) that the gods are just, and that Gloucester was punished for essay on the letter an episode of nonmarital sex by having his eyes gouged out. This is obviously NOT justice. In the most puzzling scene in the play, Edgar pretends to escort the blind Gloucester to poverty in canada essay the white cliffs of Dover, where Gloucester intends to jump to his death.
Edgar tells him he is at a2 coursework, the summit, Gloucester jumps, and faints. Edgar then changes his accent, waits for his father to revive, and poverty, tells him that God has saved his life miraculously. Of course this is a lie, but it helps Gloucester find emotional peace. Shakespeare changed his source material -- in drinking age essays the original, the son merely talks the father out of suicide. Edmund didn't believe in poverty in canada essay astrology, but considered himself a product of nature. Edgar's skeptical expression is on the media influence kinder but seems even deeper. It seems to me that Shakespeare is saying, as clearly as he can, what many people in poverty essay his own day must have believed secretly. There is no God. The comforts of religion are make-believe. Analysis On The Scarlet? Nor are we good by nature, or through our laws and customs.
The only hope for human beings is that we can be try to be decent and generous with one another. Whether or not you agree (and I do not), this deepest message explains for poverty in canada me why the cosmic tragedy of King Lear still speaks to us so powerfully. If you are asked to write about Shakespeare's tragic heroes or their tragic flaw or whatever, help yourself to my skeptical notes on Aristotle. You may find it more rewarding to essay focus on something at abbreviations to use when writing, once more obvious and more profound. Shakespeare (unlike Sophocles) is writing about real-life, flesh-and-blood people (tragic flaws -- nobody always acts smart) who live in an imperfect world (tragic choices). In Shakespeare, our sympathies are usually divided among the characters. For this reason, Aristotle's thoughts on tragedy (i.e., people are imperfect) really seem more useful in discussing Shakespeare than in discussing Sophocles. In my pathology course and here, my advice is the same -- focus on the human beings, the real-life, individual situations. essay on dr seuss Welcome. In Canada Essay! My name is Corbett Harrison, and essay scarlet letter, I have been an poverty in canada essay, educator since 1990, and a teacher-trainer since 1998. I specialize in teaching writing using differentiated instruction techniques. I also focus on critical thinking skills, especially during the abbreviations to use when writing a research paper pre-writing and in canada essay, revision steps of the writing process. Every year, I challenge myself to improve my writing instruction even more, and this website is where I post my most successful new ideas. The Northern Nevada district I serve has a balanced calendar that has me teaching from on the scarlet letter, early August to early June, and during my 7 weeks of summer and during my two annual two-week breaks, I independently contract to present workshops to in canada essay, school districts and professional organizations around the country. I have no available dates left in 2017. In 2018, I may have availability between January 8-12, March 26- April 6, and June 11 - July 27, October 1-5. If you would like to verify my availability for a specific date or dates in essays the windows offered above, please contact me at this e-mail address . You can find general information about my workshops here . Because writing--when taught right--can be the most enjoyable part of in canada your teaching day, I created this website.
Contact me through my e-mail address with questions/comments about this lesson: Corbett@CorbettHarrison.com. Here's one of my original essay-writing lessons. If you're like me, you are rarely satisfied with how a writing lesson runs, even when it goes really well. My favorite lessons are constantly in drinking age essays a state of revision, and my eighth graders regularly point out to in canada essay, me that I'm doing last year's lessons differently than I did for them when they were my seventh graders. I say to them, I don't think I've ever taught the same lesson the same way twice, and that's kind of true. For the past few years, I have been really trying to improve upon my expository writing assignments. You know, the dreaded essays. Abbreviations When Writing! My final exam for essay, both seventh and eighth grade is a critical analysis essay of essay letter a novel we've recently read, and few kids ever enjoy writing those. I often precede the serious writing assignments with a silly one. In Canada! The lesson on this page is a silly essay assignment that sets my writers up to be more successful on their final essay for me, but we have a fun time doing it; essay organization and vocabulary are both reviewed, and the kids have a fun time writing these. My nutty philosophy that drives this assignment: If you are required to write a genre you ultimately know most of your students won't enjoy writing, take a few days ahead of that assignment to introduction, let them write, using the essay same skills, but write using their silly senses of humor.
Crafting Common Core-Worthy Analyses based on Silly Children's Stories. My favorite teacher ever was Mr. Borilla ; he was the first teacher to make me feel confident about writing, so he has a special place in on the my heart. He allowed me channel my inner silly during his classroom's reading and writing time, and he appreciated my sense of humor when I applied it to his writing assignments--except the expository reports. Poverty In Canada! Oh my, no, we had to on the, take those report assignments very seriously. In fourth grade--after deeply researching by in canada, half-heartedly reading from the encyclopedia--we each wrote and published a 'President Report'; we each drew a different president's name from career research paper, Mr. In Canada Essay! Borilla's coffee can of for a career research paper choices, and I drew Thomas Jefferson, and my brain was no where developed enough to appreciate Jeffersonian philosophies. In fifth grade we wrote 'State Research Reports'; no coffee cans this time, as we were allowed to choose based on states that interested us. I chose Colorado because I'd recently visited my grandmother there. I wanted to be Dr. Seuss silly when writing those two reports, but Mr.
Borilla wouldn't allow it. Essay or report writing is a very serious matter when you're in poverty in canada essay fourth grade. Am I right?. I was a great creative writer and a lousy report writer back then. I earned B's on both big reports in Borilla's class because I tried to joke them up. Analysis On The! Essays, I learned, weren't allowed to in canada essay, be fun. Later on in my own schooling, I always cringed whenever a teacher said essay or report based on my memories of introduction research those burdensome, un-fun reports back in fourth and fifth grade. Even before Common Core State Standards, I knew it was important to teach my sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students to write analytic essays, and poverty, we wrote those long before CCSS, and we continue to write them now that we have so successfully implemented them in english my district (tee-hee!), but my students can easily identify my least favorite writing genre--expository--based on the amount of energy (or lack thereof) I have given to poverty, my past essay lessons. Even so, by the time my students leave me in 8th grade, they have had plenty of experience with analyzing literary elements and writing essays on them. To Use Writing A Research Paper! And my expository energy over the years has vastly improved, thanks in part to lessons like this one. Inspired by Borilla, we take our reports and essays very seriously in Mr.
Harrison's classroom. A lot of poverty in canada essay my kids expect to be Honors English-bound when they head to high school, and we talk very seriously about how students must be able to write a great-sounding, non-formulaic, unique essay. In middle school, we practice writing intelligently about essay and paper, our novels' themes, their authors' style of poverty in canada essay writing, and the contrasts between dynamic and static characters, because essays about literature in on the high school Honors English need to convey smart ideas in interesting ways; they can't rely on the lower-level-of-Blooms-taxonomy book report writing skills they mastered in fifth grade before they came to my class in sixth grade. My eighth graders leave me with the ability to write well about the books we read--the ones they liked and the ones they didn't like. Mentor texts I have used teaching this lesson: Become better with teaching expository! I set realistic teaching goals for myself every school year no matter what. At the time of posting revisions to this lesson write-up at my website (Spring 2014), I am finishing up my 24th year of poverty in canada essay teaching, and I am really good at what I do, which is teaching writing both authentically and in essays on the influence a way that is engaging to 95+% of my pupils, but I still want to be better.
I take this profession of ours seriously, which is why I set goals for myself without fail every year; sadly, I know there are teachers in my own building who no longer set professional goals for themselves because they've been doing their jobs long enough to be able to run their classrooms on poverty essay auto-pilot. I can't be that teacher. To enjoy my work, I need to have new goals for myself every year, and I have learned to love holding myself accountable by telling my students what my goals are every fall, explaining that I want them to give me feedback when we finish lessons I've created or revised to abbreviations to use when paper, help me achieve my own goals. In the fall of 2012, I told my kiddos that we would be doing more expository and essay writing than we had in poverty in canada essay previous years, and essay on the scarlet, that I wanted them to help me become at helping them to in canada, like and on the scarlet, value writing the expository genre. They grumbled but agreed to give me honest feedback. In 2013, this lesson--by far--became my eighth graders' favorite for the year, and when I revised it for in canada, the spring of age essays 2014, my current set of eighth graders agreed; additionally, in 2014, my seventh graders became involved with this assignment, which improved the in canada essay lesson even further, as I will explain farther down on essay and paper this page. If you follow my work online at all, you know I believe in using mentor texts pretty much no matter what the in canada essay teaching task. All of abbreviations a research my great writing lessons have mentor texts attached to poverty in canada essay, them; in addition to using them to english introduction, design writing lessons, I use them when I am working on my own professional goals--like my goal to become better with teaching expository! For the two years I devoted to improving my ability to teach expository writing skills, I had the best mentor text. The Story of My Thinking: Expository Writing Activities for 13 Teaching Situations (by Gretchen Bernabei and Dottie Hall) is poverty in canada essay, so worth having on drinking age essays your teaching bookshelf.
It is so smartly written and essay, teacher-friendly (like all of Gretchen's previous books have been), plus it comes with page after page of these fantastic organizing maps that student writers can use no matter what type of essay you've assigned them. Essay And Paper! Those thirty pages of maps make the poverty essay entire book worth the $24.00 expense. Establishing/Reviewing Academic Vocabulary: Another professional goal I have been working on lately is improving how I engage students in learning and using vocabulary words. The Common Core Standards documents are rife with academic vocabulary, and it's important to make sure your students have a handle on the fancy words that would help them in writing a critical analysis essay. By the way, if you've not yet used Fancy Nancy as a mentor text, add it to your list next year. The titular character in that series is very much into explaining her vocabulary words, and in her books she often says, That's fancy way of saying [insert synonym here]. In class, we often (and you really have to use air quotes around the word fancy when having kids do this out loud in class) channel our inner Fancy Nancies and say, Oh, that's a fancy way of saying [insert synonym here] when the big words start coming out in our conversations about literature and writing. One purpose of assigning the ridiculous essay is to review literary vocabulary words so that students can accurately use them in an essay that is fun for them to analysis letter, write. Below are fifteen words that I teach my kids over essay, time and introduction research paper, that might be helpful to learn/review right before teaching this lesson; these are literary terms my students become very familiar with during their two or three years in my classroom. I personally use this ridiculous essay lesson near the end of poverty essay our school year; it's actually my big review activity before we began preparing to write our final exam essays, though I have been thinking that it could certainly be used as more of an introduction to critical analysis essays.
When I teach this lesson, the words listed below are a review list for them, not a list of brand new words. If you are using the assignment as more of an introduction to critical analysis essays, you could probably use fewer words than the essays media list I have included below. As I've said, my 8th graders already were pretty familiar with the fifteen literary terms above when I assigned the ridiculous essay in the spring, but it had been six weeks since our last Reader's Workshop Project , so they hadn't used many of these words much in classroom conversations with each other for poverty, over a month; therefore, we did take twenty or so minutes to review the words by playing a game with them. We played a variation of charades in small groups of four or five students. Students took turns drawing one of the words, written on index card, from an envelope I had prepared for english a2 coursework introduction, each small group, and they had to pantomime the words' meaning in a literary context; stress the literary context, especially for poverty in canada essay, the unfortunate-but-warped child who might draw the word 'climax.' After playing for twelve to fifteen minutes in small groups, each group had to nominate the person from their group who had the best idea for pantomiming one these literary terms for the whole class. Fun was had by all! The charade game/review prepared them to a2 coursework introduction, use these words again when we started writing our ridiculous essays.
Next year, and poverty essay, I'm saying this in case you choose to do this lesson as an analysis scarlet, introduction to in canada, critical analysis essays (instead of as a review, as I did), I am planning to have students create Word Art drawings and explanations for all of these academic vocabulary words listed above, and I will save the students' work from to use a research, that assignment in poverty in canada essay a folder, and bring that folder out for students to paper, critique right before writing our essays; that would serve as just a good review as our charade game did this year. What's Word art? I am glad you asked. This spring, when I challenged my eighth graders to design and create new vocabulary activities they could teach my seventh graders to begin using, they came up with some good ones, and Word Art is one that I think would work well with academic vocabulary. Basically, the students have to poverty in canada essay, illustrate/decorate the letters of a vocabulary word(s) so that each letter relates somehow to the meaning of the essays on the media influence word, and then they have to in canada, create a three- to on the scarlet letter, four-sentence explanation of the choices they have made when illustrating. Below are some of their excellent examples, which--true enough--are not for the academic words I listed above, but which show how the word art activity looks when it's done thoroughly and poverty essay, properly by my three different grade levels.
I can totally see the students being able to illustrate/explain the on the scarlet letter word setting or tone using the same activity. Anyway, that's how I'll review the vocabulary next spring for this assignment when I attempt to make this good assignment even better: by poverty in canada, having the scarlet letter students create word art examples for our literary terms that we can bring out and look at. Establishing a RAFT after sharing some student samples of past 'ridiculous essays.' When I first did this assignment back in the spring of 2013 with my eighth graders, the children's book we over-analyzed to write our ridiculous essays about poverty, was Green Eggs and Ham by--of course--Dr. Seuss. My students were tickled with my incredibly over-dramatic read-aloud, and abbreviations paper, they talked about poverty essay, it for weeks afterwards. Drinking! I was a good actor back in poverty high school and college, and I feigned so much anger when I was reading the narrator's lines--the character who does not like green eggs ham or Sam-I-Am--that I accidentally tore one of the on the media influence pages when I flipped it. My 2014 eighth graders (who had One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish as their Dr. Seuss book to poverty, over-analyze) confessed to me after I had read the book that they were disappointed I hadn't ripped a page when I read it to them; they had all heard from the drinking age essays previous year's eighth graders, like Natalie, who actually entered the Mr. Stick cartoon at right as a contender in my Mr. Stick of the poverty in canada essay Week extra credit contest I host every Friday.
Students--in their notebooks--have to english introduction, write about something that happened that week (or about an idea that occurred to them) and make a Mr. Stick cartoon to illustrate the writing. The Mr. Stick of the Week contest is in canada essay, just one more way I try to get my students to take care of and put pride into essay and paper, their writer's notebooks. Poverty Essay! Most entries in essay and paper this weekly contest are hand-drawn and hand-written, but Natalie wanted to do hers on the computer, which was an poverty essay, impressive feat, if you ask me. Learn more about Mr. Stick here , or click here to see some of the Mr.
Stick entries I have photographed and posted at Pinterest when students win. Having a Pinterest board, I find, is a great motivator for drinking, my students, and it allows me to keep an amazing online gallery of student samples. Once you have shared the children's book you want your students to over-analyze, explain to them the task at hand: they are going to work with a partner and--together--create a fairly short essay that does at in canada, least three things: 1) introduce the english book using excellent literary vocabulary words; 2) analyze the poverty essay picture book's theme; 3) analyze the author's writing style. We call these Ridiculous Essays because no one would really over-analyze Dr. Seuss to age essays, write an essay like the one I'm about to ask them to pen. It's their job to make the essay sound like it's the type of critical essay of literature one would expect to write in college or high school Honors classes; that means they have to use their smart kid words, and I refer them back to poverty in canada, my list of vocabulary.
I call this type of assignment a RAFTS prompt, and here is drinking age essays, what I show the kids so that they understand their purpose and their audience: My students thrive when they can read and essay, discuss another students' writing sample for an assignment, and the beauty of doing a lesson a second time (and using a different Seuss book when doing it) is analysis scarlet letter, that they can read a sample about a totally different book, understand their task at poverty, hand a bit better by seeing someone else's previous attempt, but have no solid ideas to on the, directly copy from. Green Eggs and poverty in canada essay, Ham, which I saved two fun samples from last year, is writing paper, a radically different story than One Fish, Two Fish. In its second year, the poverty in canada essay discussions my kids had about the drinking previous year's student essays set them up for so much more success when they prepared to write about One Fish, Two Fish. . So here are the in canada two samples of the a2 coursework introduction writing task I am assigning my students; these samples were inspired by in canada essay, Green Eggs and Ham. The first discussion question for for a paper, my writers was Who sounded smarter with their essay, and poverty in canada essay, what did they do specifically to sound smarter than the other essay? Abby and english introduction, Wonje's Ridiculous Essay. a partner-write from two of my eighth graders in 2013. a partner-write from two of my eighth graders in poverty in canada 2013.
The timeless story, Green Eggs and english a2 coursework introduction, Ham, written by Dr. Seuss, shares the story of an essay, unnamed character and his confrontation with Sam-I-Am. The plot unfolds as Sam-I-Am offers the for a un-named main character a platter of green eggs and ham. The main character rejects the offer and becomes increasingly upset with Sam-I-Am, who seems adamant in refusing to poverty essay, allow the main character to pass up such an opportunity and a delicacy. As the story progresses, the protagonist develops, and it becomes clear that this un-named narrator isin facta very dynamic character.
The narrator becomes a much more animated character, and in his rage is prone to repeating the same statements over essay and paper, and over again. This is in canada, a great change from his original polite refusal to accept the green eggs and abbreviations to use a research paper, ham. In contrast, Sam-I-Am changes little, other than revealing new situations in which green eggs and ham eating would be ideal. He does not seem to register the anger or irritation of the un-named narrator. A major theme throughout the novel is that judgment should be withheld until a situation is poverty in canada essay, fully understood. The un-named narrator shows a wonderful demonstration of the essay and paper consequences of not following the precept of poverty in canada essay this theme. Judging the green eggs and ham without tasting them, our narrator only on the, allows himself to be goaded into situations that are more and more out of hand. Seuss’ writing style is very unique in that his tale is told only using dialogue. The choice of repetition in this dialogue is crucial to developing the rage of the poverty in canada main character, and scarlet letter, it results in well-planned idea development.
As a whole, the sentence fluency suffers, as all the sentences share nearly identical sentence patterns, which keeps the writing almost too simplistic. The story Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss shares a simple plot, in which two characters debate whether or not the closed-minded, un-named narrator will enjoy green eggs and ham if he simply tries them. Sam-I-Am, the presenter of the green eggs and ham and this story’s antagonist, attempts--through multiple scenarios in essay which green eggs and essay on the, ham may be enjoyed--to make the un-named narrator eat green eggs and ham. Our un-named narrator is decidedly dynamic inasmuch as he is in canada essay, stubbornly prejudiced against green eggs, ham, and Sam-I-Am, but ultimately he discovers that all objects of media influence prejudice are, in poverty fact, not as bad as he previously viewed them. Sam-I-Am, on introduction the complete opposite side of the poverty in canada essay character scale, is very static in his persistence that our un-named narrator should try green eggs and ham. Despite the un-named narrator’s repeated refusals to try green eggs and for a career paper, ham anywhere Sam suggests eating them, such as in poverty a box or with a fox, Sam-I-Am maintains unflinching optimism and persistence, achieving his goal in the end as the narrator agrees to try that which he has shown prejudice. As the short narrative progresses and the un-named narrator’s stubbornness begin to dissipate, a theme emerges. Drinking! It is clear that perseverance is the key to Sam-I-Am’s success; we can, therefore, declare one of the themes of Dr. Seuss’s masterpiece, Green Eggs and Ham, is that if you persevere and in canada essay, refuse to give up, you can accomplish your goals in on the media the end. Rubric discussion prompt.
Which essay sounds smarter? is a pretty subjective discussion prompt, which I start with on purpose. Whenever there's time, I actually want my students to read other students' samples twice--once for poverty in canada, comprehension, a second time for to use when a research paper, the purpose of analysis--, so I give them a more objective prompt for their second read of the two essays. Here is a rubric, I say. Read it over carefully, then re-read the essay two essays knowing what the rubric is specifically looking for. Which of the essays would score better using this rubric? Be prepared to defend your ideas by citing words, phrases, and sentences from the essay or the drinking age essays rubric. How partner writing tasks work. I have become a real believer in what I call partner writes.
That means--when it's appropriate--that two kids write a short piece of writing together, passing the pencil back and in canada, forth so that every other sentence is in their own handwriting. Before a sentence is written, they are required to talk about it, shaping its exact wording while they practice their negotiating skills with each other. It's a great technique, especially if you're doing a fun piece of writing that relatively short. Why partner writers? So many of my kids are interpersonal learners, which means they learn better when they can talk about a task while they're doing it. Writing an essay--in most classrooms I visit--logically means quiet writing time. When it's a state test or an essay final or you're summatively assessing a writing skill we've been working on, then don't use partner writers. Analysis Essay Scarlet Letter! But if they're practicing smaller writing skills, which they totally are with this ridiculous essay assignment , I find they do a pretty great job writing together. In the in canada essay partnership, they practice and negotiate those smaller writing skills to craft the best-sounding sentences they can.
Later, they will write alone (in this case, these ridiculous essays were practice for essays influence, our final exam essay, which was a critical analysis essay on a real piece of literature), and I find that having that experience in place helps them all do better. Heck, I even allow them to have their partner essays out as a resource they can consult when they come in to write the final, real essay, which they write completely on in canada essay their own in a quiet classroom. During the drinking discussions and poverty in canada, the negotiations that come with partner-writes, however, learning is happening. Just make sure they pass the essays on the media influence pencil. A warning from an experienced teacher: you will have students who pass the poverty pencil and the rough draft page to essay on the, their partners, and they'll try to get away with not talking about the next sentence before it's written. They secretly agree that I'll just write the essay next one. We don't have to talk about it. Essay On The Scarlet! Eliminate that possibility right from the start. Poverty Essay! See my story in the box below.
A funny, true story from the abbreviations to use when writing memory banks of Corbett Harrison, former-actor and in canada essay, present-day teacher: A few years back, I knew I had numerous kids in essay one class who would most-likely try to get away with silently writing during partner write time, because--you know--some kids think they are too good to have to talk to each other and negotiate; they just want to be left alone to essay, do the bare minimum. Introduction For A! I wasn't sure which students would try to get away with it first, so I cheaply hired (for two small pieces of in canada chocolate) a pair of my good kids from that class. They were told to pretend they were not discussing before writing, and for on the influence, about six minutes they--indeed--pretended that they were trying to poverty, get away a no-talk partner-write. I let them get to their fourth or fifth sentence before I--in my best acting voice--loudly called them out for not talking before writing. I grabbed their partner-write essay and dramatically ripped it in half, telling them to Start over! And this time follow my rules! I expect one whole minute of talking--and that's the minimum!--before you even put down the first word of your essay's next sentence. Three of us acted for analysis on the, the class that day, it cost me two mere pieces of chocolate, but I ended up with one class that really became good discuss-ers and negotiators during partner-writes. If my kids only knew what a good actor and manipulator I am!
Shhhh. Don't tell them. Gosh, I hope they're not reading this! So after the class analyzed last year's eighth grade writing samples based on poverty Green Eggs Ham, here's how it all went down with this year's eighth graders and this year's partner-write: I read (quite dramatically, thank-you very much!) One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to my very amused (and kind of confused. it's a weird Dr. Seuss story) eighth graders.
I handed out printed copies of the Seuss text, which I conveniently found posted at someone's blog . I believe I had to edit a little. If that blog gets taken down for any reason, try this Google search to see if you can find another typed up version (or have your student aide type it, which is essay and paper, more often how I end up with so many typed-up versions of my favorite picture books.) I got lucky with finding the blog post this time. Students also had copies of the 8th graders' Green Eggs and Ham essays on in canada their desks for additional support. Partners were established, and age essays, the rules of partner-writes were reviewed. I reviewed some basic organization of an essay about literature: Paragraph 1: Introduce us to the basic storyline of book and in canada essay, build a thesis statement.
Use literary terms correctly. Paragraph 2: Discuss theme or writing style, using examples from the text to support your claims. Introduction Career Research Paper! Use literary terms correctly. Paragraph 3: Discuss theme or writing style, whichever one you didn't cover in previous paragraph. Use literary terms correctly Paragraph 4: Optional, but if they rush through this and in canada, finish early, they are required to write a conclusion or explore a third, literary topic (like setting or plot structure or. Abbreviations Writing! ) I set the timer for 25 minutes, and they were off and poverty in canada, writing. Introduction Research! Both my classes--at the twenty-minute check-in mark--said they'd need about ten more minutes, and they were granted that time because they were being productive.
Not everyone had made it all the way through the essay three required paragraphs, but most were close enough. Partners teamed up with another set of abbreviations to use when writing partners, and in canada, they shared their essays out loud with each other. Partners found another set of essay and paper partners again, and they shared their essays again. I took nominations for most intelligent-sounding ridiculous essays, and the next day in class, my aide started typing those up for me. Piquing my seventh graders' interest while preparing everyone for their final essay assignment : I have taught writing to all grade levels (K-16), but I currently have sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Poverty Essay! All my kids write daily in their writer's notebooks . All collect vocabulary as their regular weekly homework task from english, me. By the time they're eighth graders with me, they are very good at these two routine tasks.
Very, very good. If you're ever amazed by poverty, the quality of my students' samples, please understand why; I have many of those poor kids for three years, and they get good over those three years. My end-of-year final for english, both my seventh and eighth graders is the same task: write an intelligent-sounding critical analysis essay of the final book(s) we've read together as a class. We prepare to poverty essay, write the essay and paper essay in poverty in canada essay the three weeks before the final exam happens--through Socratic discussions or partner-writing tasks like the ridiculous essays, among other tricks I have up my sleeve--but they aren't allowed to even start writing their essays until the day of the final. Analysis! It's a rough draft essay that I expect them to poverty in canada, take great care with when composing it, but they know I'm less interested in their conventions and more interested in their academic voices and their unique ideas that they can back up with text evidence. If you happen to care what challenging books Common Core has me assigning my kiddos, my 8th graders end our school year with a World War novel study; they have one of three books they can pick from.
